About the Save Abandoned Babies Foundation

The Save Abandoned Babies Foundation is a nonprofit volunteer 501(c)3 organization dedicated to saving babies from being abandoned in dumpsters and other unsafe places. Our only mission is to save the lives of newborns that might otherwise be abandoned unsafely in Illinois.

Our grassroots effort began in March of 2000 when one of our members read a newspaper article about a baby found in a Chicago dumpster. We quickly learned that other states were addressing this horrible and growing problem with "safe haven laws."

We went to work, calling on anyone willing to help. The Save Abandoned Babies volunteers drafted a safe haven law and lobbied for its passage. The resulting Abandoned Newborn Infant Protection Act unanimously passed both the Illinois House and Senate and was signed into Illinois law in August of 2001. For more information, please go to SaveAbandonedBabies.org for a detailed look at our efforts.

The Illinois Safe Haven law offers a safe option for desperate parents in crisis. By handing over an unharmed baby, 30 days old or younger, to personnel at any hospital, emergency medical facility, staffed fire station, or police station they can walk away with no questions asked.

The Save Abandoned Babies Foundation is focused on increasing awareness that this option exists. Making information about the law available to those who need it will save innocent new lives.

Guidelines

All Entrants for the Save Abandoned Babies “Inspire Me” scholarship must be High School students in their senior year.  In addition, applicants must have an acceptance letter to an accredited college, university, or accredited vocational school. Finally an unofficial transcript from your school including the name of your guidance counselor must accompany your submission packet. This scholarship is available to Illinois residents only.

Focus

Essay submissions will highlight in no more than 10 pages how a student would promote the Save Abandoned Babies Foundation and or the Save Haven Law using Social Media. If more than one platform is used; for example, Twitter plus Facebook, the written document must show how the utilization of the two platforms in tandem will promote the Safe Haven message, in a clear and concise strategy. The Foundation currently has a Facebook and Twitter account and can be used with other platforms in the essay to assist with your strategy; however, social media platforms outside of Facebook and Twitter are also acceptable. The proposal should not exceed 2000 words. All work should be done in 12 point font. Special consideration will be given to students who submit neat and legible work.
